The House

Set in a large house in San Jose, California in the mid-1960’s, The House invites the reader to spend a year in the life of a therapeutic community.

Carlotta has no college degree, medical license, nor any training for the work she is doing, but she has begun a project: to help others move forward in their lives through therapeutic communal living.

________

Carlotta’s community is an extremely varied group of men and women: queer and straight, black and white, married and single, teachers and students, artists, and indigent people who work for their room and board.

Within the confines of the House, they struggle to make sense of their pasts and their relationships. As the work progresses, some journeys lead to new hope and some lead to disaster.
